Memento Project

My memento represents the time when I found my first kitten outside when I was looking for houses with my mom and grandma. I snuck the kitten under my shirt into our car and my mom did not notice until she heard a meowing noise. She was shocked I had pulled that off so well but she also thought it was extremely funny and cute and she decided to let me keep the kitten. For the project, we were only allowed to use three materials, so mine were: 1. A cut up T-shirt 2. Balsa Wood 3. Faux Fur I wanted to give the effect of a pocket and my kitten hiding inside of it. I associate the color green (even though this looks a little gray) with my memory because I found him outside near a lot of trees... which is also why I incorporated wood into my design. 3D to 2D Project

Original image of 3D image from Fluxus Box                                            "Entrance to Wonderland" For my 3D to 2D project I used an item from my Fluxus Box. The item is a box that I painted black and white diamonds and I painted a white keyhole in the center. My fluxus box was based off the movie "Alice in Wonderland" but I put a dark twist on it. For the 3D to 2D, I wanted this to resemble an entrance into Wonderland but have it be way more complicated and difficult to get into as opposed to just  falling down the rabbit hole like in the original movie.

Masking Tape Shoe

This project was our first project in the class and we had to create two shoes out of masking tape, using one of our own shoes as a reference. I decided to use my pair of Adidas shoes. The first shoe was really hard for me as far as figuring out the shapes I needed to create as well as taking into account any negative space I needed to show. The second shoe was much easier for me and took less time because I knew how to achieve the platform and basic shape of the shoe. The hardest part of this for me was the top of the shoe where its rounded at the ends. To get that shape I had to ball up a lot of  tape and shove it in the top of the shoe to get it to be rounded. My favorite part of the project was doing the bottom of the shoe. To get the exact details from my original shoe, I put tape on the bottom of my shoe, and pressed this tool very gently over the tape so it wouldn't make holes, but just enough to wear it would indent the detailing onto the tape. Fluxus Box Project

My Fluxus Box was based off of the movie "Alice in Wonderland" but I decided to put a dark twist on it and made everything mostly black or very creepy looking. The box as well as creating all of the objects probably took me around 8 hours to complete. This project was my favorite out of the class because "Alice in "Wonderland" is one of my favorite movies and I loved giving it such an unsettling vibe. I made the box very tall and dark to resemble falling down the rabbit hole.   Some of the artists I took inspiration from as far as design principles for this project were, Lenka Clayton and Portia Munson. In Lenka Clayton's work I noticed value and texture and wanted to incorporate that into my designs. For Portia Munson, I took away color and proportions from her designs.

On Longing Assignment

1. "The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale."  I went parasailing for the first time this past spring and it was crazy seeing how much smaller everything was in comparison to me and my friend when we were up that high. 2. "The Souvenir reduces the public, the monumental, and the three-dimensional into the miniature, that which can be enveloped by the body." Over the summer I went hiking in Virginia and ended up taking home a rock that I found on the trail on the way up. I wanted to keep it to remember the hike I took with my friend and how beautiful it was. 3. "To have a souvenir of the exotic is to possess both a specimen and a trophy." 4. "Nostalgia cannot be sustained without loss." This picture was taken this past summer at the very last Vans Warped Tour. Basla Wood Project

For this project, we had to make one item dominantly out of paper and one dominantly out of balsa wood. The first image is my paper design and I designed a cube with holes cut out so you can see inside, and in the middle of the cube is super glue attached to a circle sculpture made out of balsa wood. The next two images is my design made out of balsa wood and masking tape. I titled this piece "Escape" because once I put all of the masking tape on I noticed it looked like the tape had a mind of its own and was trying to unravel itself off of the balsa wood.

HAIR "Each hair grows for only about two to six years, at about five or six inches a year, and then its follicle rests for a few months, the hair falls out, and is eventually replaced by a new hair. So when you see a beautiful head of hair, you're looking at hairs in many different stages in a complex system of growth, death, and renewal. Fifteen percent of it is resting at any one time, the other 85 percent growing; many dozens of hairs are all set to die tomorrow, and deep in the follicles new hairs are building." I thought it was interesting how you can have a full head of hair and so many of them can be in different stages of growth/life.
